What are the different types of fly lines?

The WF (Weight Forward) fly lines:
These lines are thicker at the front and thinner towards the back. They offer high casting efficiency and are suitable for beginners, as the entire weight of the line quickly moves forward during the cast, making them easier to cast.
WF lines are available in different models with different tips to allow a precise match with the fly rod and with the various casting techniques. WF fly lines are versatile and suitable for both sea fishing and freshwater fishing.

DT (Double Taper) fly lines:

DT lines have a uniform point at both ends and are thinner in the middle. They allow for accurate long distance casting and a gentle landing of the dry fly on the water. DT lines are excellent for accurate short distance casting and in still water where a gentle presentation of the dry fly is essential.

What is the exact difference between WF and DT fly lines?

The WF lines are ideal for long casts and for roller casting which is certainly one of the most used and useful casts in fishing.

DT lines are excellent for short to medium range dry fly presentations.
The choice between WF and DT depends on personal preference, fishing style and of course water conditions.

Floating and sinking lines

Floating Fly Line:

As the name suggests, these fly lines float and stay on the surface of the water. They are therefore ideal for fishing with dry flies or nymphs in shallow water. In combination with a sinking leader (polyleader), these lines are also excellent for fishing with streamers.

Sinking Fly Line:

Sinking lines are heavier and sink below the surface of the water. They are ideal for fishing in deep water or fast currents, where a deeper presentation of the fly is needed. With different sinking speeds available, you can fish at various depths.

Choosing the right fly line depends on many factors, including fishing conditions, the chosen fishing method and personal preferences. We can of course advise you in choosing the best line for your individual needs.

How exactly do you determine the class of your fly line?

The fly line class is determined by the weight of the first 30 feet (9.14 meters) of the line. This weight is measured in "grains" (1 grain = 0.0648 grams). To accurately match fly rods and fly lines from different manufacturers, weight classes have been standardized by the American Fly Fishing Trade Association (AFFTA).

Fly line classes range from #1 to #15, with smaller numbers indicating lighter lines and larger numbers indicating heavier lines.

Determining the class of the fly line

The first 30 feet (9.14 meters) of the fly line is weighed to determine the class.
The measured weight is compared with the standard values above to determine the appropriate class.
Why is an accurate matching of the fly line class important?

The line class should match the fly rod class to achieve accurate casts with the fly rod. An incorrect match makes casting difficult and long-distance casting is not possible. Lighter lines (class 1-7) are used for trout fishing and the like, both in lakes and streams. Heavier lines (class 7-15) are suitable for all types of predatory fish and for sea fishing.
