The Fly Reel | SEMI-AUTOMATIC FLY REELS

Fly reels are designed specifically for fly fishing with a fly rod. All standard reels are built on roller axles. The fly line should always be pulled out of the reel by hand before casting. Also, winding the fly line is done with all standard reels by hand.

An exception is Franco Vivarelli. These semi-automatic reels offer you automatic detection of the fly line with a short movement of the integrated lever. This patented system has been on the market for several years and is particularly appreciated by fly fishermen who fish in mountain streams or with streamers.

The right choice of reel should be well considered.
Size, weight and appearance play an important role in the purchase. Weight should not be ignored! The fly reel in combination with the fly line mounted on the fly rod should be perfectly balanced so as not to tire after a short time.

What materials are used in production?
Fly reels in the lower price segment are made of graphite. They are manufactured using the die-casting method and are often the first choice for beginners entering the world of fly fishing.

A good alternative to graphite reels are aluminum reels produced with die-casting technology. These have medium prices but in appearance resemble a high-quality milled aluminum reel.

The high quality reels are milled from a block of aluminum. Precision, light weight and the best drag systems characterize these reels. In combination with anodized or carbon parts these reels achieve a unique look.

What does “Large Arbor” mean?
Large arbor reels are becoming more and more popular among fly fishermen. Due to the large internal diameter, the fly line can be wound faster. However, this is not the main reason why more and more fishermen are turning to large arbor reels, the big advantage is the reduction of the so-called "memory effect" which reduces the curling of the fly line.

Choose the right size!
Reels usually cover a maximum of three sizes (AFTM #) of use. This classification helps you quickly find your desired reel. Manufacturers also declare the backing capacity that is placed on the spool.

What drag system do fly reels have?
Beginner reels often have no or a ratchet drag system. This offers the following advantages and disadvantages. The advantage of not having a drag system on the reel is undoubtedly the weight saving. Designed for light fly fishing, there is no drag needed and with the palm of your hand you can easily drill smaller fish. Another thing is fishing for salmon, pike and tuna. Here, a well-functioning drag system is mandatory. Fighting fish with frantic runs can be done decisively and safely, by precisely adjusting the "Anti-Reverse-System" drag.
