Many salmon and large trout flies with wings and tails require squirrel hair. Most animals have hairs that are hollow with a dense undercoat to provide insulation. A squirrel's tail, however, is practically all bone, so insulation is not necessary.

Squirrel tail hairs are tough and shiny. They remove dirt and dust and do not clog with water. This is important for the squirrel who uses his tail as balance and also as an extra hand. It is also important for the fly maker because it gives us a material that holds its shape when wet and provides a consistent profile for the fly.
