Lamson Arx II Nightfall – full-cage fly reel for long rods

Full‑cage frame with extra‑large conical drag and added heft.

Built as the anchor of Lamson’s two‑handed specialty lineup, the Arx II Nightfall is burly and overbuilt. Its full‑cage frame keeps thin running lines from slipping out, while an extra‑large conical drag is ready to apply pressure when it counts. Increased line capacity and a little extra heft complement long rods and fat lines. Crack open that leather fly wallet, pick the right head and settle into a rhythm—this reel is designed for sessions with long sticks and modern line systems.

What kind of fishing is it suited to?

The available sizes cover WF 8 to WF 12 classes with substantial backing capacities shown below. A full‑cage frame keeps thin running lines contained, which is valuable when fishing heads. The extra‑large conical drag delivers firm, controllable pressure. With increased capacity and added heft, Arx II Nightfall pairs naturally with long two‑handed rods and heavier line systems where stability and line management matter.

    Care and use

    • Do not remove the drag knob or the two‑holed nut in its center.
    • Ensure the Gland Cap is firmly hand‑tight, especially before first use or after reversing retrieve direction.
    • Drag is designed to run lubrication‑free; do not oil the drag system. A small amount of WD‑40 may be used on the retrieve handle to clear dirt.
    • Freshwater: occasionally rinse under fresh running water and wipe spool and frame; keep the spool spindle clean of debris.
    • Saltwater: rinse under fresh water after every use. Occasionally rinse the drag—remove the spool, unscrew the Gland Cap, remove the red and silver clutch assembly, rinse all parts including the inside of the drag cylinder, and allow to dry completely before reassembly.

    Go-Fish assessment

Positioned as the anchor in Lamson’s two‑handed lineup, Arx II Nightfall combines a full‑cage frame with an extra‑large conical drag for confident control over thin running lines and modern heads. Choose the size that matches your WF line class and the listed capacity requirements; the model’s added heft helps settle longer rods in hand. For mixed environments, follow the care guidance to keep the drag running clean and consistent.
