Simms Midstream Hooded Jacket Jasper
The Simms Midstream Hooded Jacket Jasper is a lightweight, highly versatile insulated jacket designed for fly anglers and outdoor enthusiasts who need reliable warmth without unnecessary bulk. Its standout feature is the use of Lavalan® Sport wool insulation, combining the natural temperature- and moisture-management properties of wool with the performance and functionality expected from modern technical outdoor apparel.
The Midstream Hooded Jacket is primarily designed as a versatile insulating mid-layer. It works exceptionally well underneath a wading jacket or waterproof shell when temperatures drop, while also serving as a comfortable standalone outer layer in dry conditions. It is particularly useful during cold early-morning starts, extended fishing sessions, breaks on the river, and travel to remote fishing locations.
Lavalan® Sport – natural wool insulation
The heart of the jacket is its Lavalan® Sport wool insulation. Wool offers natural performance characteristics that make it particularly effective across changing temperatures and humidity levels. It helps manage moisture while maintaining a comfortable microclimate around the body. Wool also has naturally odor-resistant properties, making it especially practical for extended fishing trips, travel, and backcountry use.
The insulation is body-mapped, with different insulation weights used in different areas to provide warmth where it is most needed without creating unnecessary bulk. The main body uses 60 g insulation, while the sleeves, hood, and side panels use a lighter 40 g insulation. This carefully balanced construction delivers a combination of warmth, low weight, and unrestricted mobility.
The insulation combines natural virgin wool with plant-based PLA derived from corn. The main body insulation consists of 80% virgin wool and 20% corn-based PLA, while the lighter insulation used in the sleeves, hood, and side panels consists of 70% virgin wool and 30% corn-based PLA.
Durable and water-resistant construction
The outer fabric and lining are made from a flexible 85% nylon / 15% spandex woven material. Nylon provides the durability and abrasion resistance needed for active outdoor use, while the spandex content contributes additional flexibility and freedom of movement. A C0 DWR finish helps the fabric repel light rain and moisture.
The Midstream is not designed to replace a fully waterproof rain jacket. Instead, its strength lies in providing lightweight insulation, moisture management, flexibility, and water resistance. In heavy rain, it can be combined with a waterproof outer shell for a highly effective layering system.
Practical features for fly anglers
The adjustable hood provides additional warmth and protection around the head and neck while maintaining peripheral vision. This is particularly useful for fly fishing, where anglers need to remain aware of their surroundings, casting space, and water conditions.
Storage is provided by a concealed YKK-zippered chest pocket and two concealed-zippered hand pockets. These offer convenient and secure storage for small fishing accessories, personal items, or essentials that need to remain readily accessible.
Inside, the jacket features two generous mesh dump pockets for additional gear storage. One of these internal pockets also serves as a clever packing solution: the entire jacket can be packed into the interior dump pocket, allowing it to be compressed into a compact package for easy transport in a fishing pack or backpack.
The Lycra-finished cuffs make the jacket particularly easy to layer underneath a waterproof shell or wading jacket, reducing bulk around the wrists and sleeves. A drawcord-adjustable hem allows the fit to be fine-tuned while helping retain body heat.
From cold early-morning starts and autumn river fishing to travel, hiking, and camp use, the Simms Midstream Hooded Jacket Jasper provides an excellent balance of natural insulation and modern technical performance. Its combination of Lavalan® wool insulation, low weight, mobility, water resistance, practical storage, and packability makes it an outstanding addition to the technical clothing system of any serious fly angler.
